Our mission
Digital signatures and encryption are the backbone of trust on the internet — in vehicles, factories and government services. When quantum computers break today's schemes, that trust breaks with them.
FLOQI is not developing a theoretical solution to a hypothetical problem. We are building infrastructure that runs in real demonstrators — and whose results feed into standards that affect millions of systems.
Our approach
Hybrid instead of replacement
Rather than shutting down existing PKIs, FLOQI develops hybrid X.509 certificates. Classical and post-quantum signatures in one certificate. No big bang, no downtime risk.
Parallel deployment
Conventional and PQC PKIs run simultaneously. Organisations migrate at their own pace — not at the pace of a research project.
Standards contribution
Results feed into IETF, ETSI and NIST contexts. What FLOQI develops is not only for the project — it is for the industry.
The consortium
Eight partners from research, industry and trust services form the FLOQI consortium. Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH coordinates the project.
| Partner | Role |
|---|---|
| Technische Universität Berlin | Research coordination, cryptography |
| ETAS GmbH | Automotive embedded security |
| D-Trust GmbH | Trust services, certificate infrastructure |
| NXP Semiconductors Germany GmbH | Hardware security, secure elements |
| Robert Bosch GmbH | Automotive security research |
| Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH | Project management, PKI expertise |
| Fraunhofer Institute AISEC | Applied security research |
| BMW AG | Automotive use cases, demonstrators |
Demonstrators
The schemes developed in the project are tested in three application domains:
- Automotive — control algorithms and vehicle communication with long product lifecycles
- Industry 4.0 — M2M communication and cyber-physical systems in production plants
- Trust services — certificate issuance and PKI operation by trust service providers
Funding
FLOQI is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the "Post-Quantum Cryptography" programme. Other projects in the same programme: Aquorypt, KBLS, PQC4MED, QuantumRISC, QuaSiModO, SIKRIN-KRYPTOV.
